![]() The reason why Bloody Kisses works so well is because the band decided to incorporate pop melodies into their droning, gothic sound, without sacrificing everything that makes Type O Negative what they are. The band’s debut album, “Slow, Deep, and Hard” from way back in 1991 featured a lot of thrash and punk influences, along with more obvious lyrics designed to offend (Peter sure was an angry guy). Type O Negative has always been known to write depressing, droning heavy metal songs, with a lot of them sprinkled with extremely dry and self-deprecating humor. It also proved to be a real success at the time it was released, as the album went gold on the strength of singles and videos like “Christian Woman” and “Black No. This I’m sure is debatable between metal fans, but for this listener, having listened to each Type O album meticulously over time, Bloody Kisses stands tall as the band's best album by far. ![]() When you look at the band’s discography, there’s obviously no stronger album that they’ve created than 1993’s Bloody Kisses, a near masterpiece for the band. ![]() His death prompted me to dig back to my old Type O cds, and have another listen to the band famously known as "The Drab Four", a nickname they certainly earned through this album, "Bloody Kisses". One thing I’m sure most fans can agree on, is that Peter Steele has certainly left his mark in metal history. Lead Singer Peter Steele’s death, however sad it is, does bring sort of an appropriate end to the notoriously depressed and at times troubled singer, and as such, listening to certain songs (or the entire World Coming Down album) from the band’s discography adds an ever deeper and morbid meaning to them. Certainly one of the premier goth metal bands of our time. Type O released seven studio albums, with their most recent being 2007’s Dead Again.Review Summary: Unquestionably TON's best album.Īhh, Type O Negative. Steele reportedly suffered from clinical depression, reflected in the band’s doom-laden lyrics, dark image and an often morbid sense of humor. The earlier rumor sprung from an image of a tombstone with his name and the dates 1962-2005 that was briefly posted on the band’s Web site but then removed. “I loved my friend … our idol … my heart is with his band and family.”ī, a site run by the band’s former label, Roadrunner Records, also reported that Type O keyboardist Josh Silver had confirmed that Steele died on Wednesday.Ī rumor circulated that Steele had died in 2005, but that turned out to be a publicity stunt to promote their new record, making it difficult to assess the validity of this latest report. “Today is a very sad day in metal … end of an era … Peter Steele passed today,” she wrote. It all comes down to a climax that, like the other set pieces of rising action, doesn't have as much bite as it should, but does deliver on as much, if not more intrigue than any preceding intriguing set piece, and for that, I'd like to give a bit of credit to Simon Quarterman and Evan Helmuth, the relative best performances of the film, which isn't saying much at all, considering that everyone else, while not bad, is blandly mediocre. ![]() This, of course, dilutes the already atmospherically tainted moments where something actually happens, like, say, an excorcism sequence, yet it's not like moments such as those are lifeless, for although direction and atmosphere fall flat, the general structure of the film's rising action set pieces have an audacitity and bruality to them that may go undercut by direcorial flaws, and rarely hit all that hard to begin with, but establish a degree of consequence, and with it, more intrigue than this film deserves. However, regardless of the borderline plotlessness that plagues this film and will be touched more upon later on in this review, the film isn't exactly aimless, as it has its sights set on certain points, it's just that it gets there so startlingly blandly that you barely even care by the time this film gets to where it aims to go. Though extremely formulaic and barely structured into an actual plot, this film's ideas are undeniably rather interesting in concept, thus creating a degree of immediate intrigue that sticks with the film for a little bit, only to dissipate after a while, once you come to realize that this film is going very few places very slowly. Still, as poor as this film is, it's hard to deny some strengths, however limited they may be. I always figured that Pee-wee demon inside him somewhere, it's just that I didn't expect for him to turn out to be that demon, though, now that I think about, it does explain a lot, which is something that you can't say about this film, or at least this film's ending. If nothing else, the song "Devil Inside" is less obnoxious than Suzan Crowley's Maria Rossi character, with all of her going around and talking about, "Connect the dots", which leaves me to think that she may not so much be possessed by Satan as much as she's possessed by Pee-wee Herman. ![]() Yeah, I'm not terribly crazy about that song, or INXS for that matter, but hey, at least "Devil Inside" is a better song than this is a film.
